France Televisions explores immersive tennis at Roland Garros

The Innovation Department of France Televisions, together with the Sports Department, will present various prototypes on the theme of "Immersive Tennis & AI".
For this 2023 edition of the RG Lab, in partnership with the French Federation of Tennis, the Digital Department of France Televisions and its technological partners will present several use cases combining advances in artificial intelligence, motion capture and volumetric video.
These experiences will be delivered on various platforms and immersive screens, and will complete the work done during the previous edition on immersive spaces by integrating, in particular, the restitution of matches in 3D.

This will be an opportunity for the Innovation Department and the editorial teams of the Sports Department to test, during the tournament, the evolution of these new formats and to evaluate their potential within France Télévisions' future offerings.

Game replays on immersive spaces in motion capture

Two demonstrators developed by France Télévision's Innovation teams will allow to relive real game sequences captured on the Philippe Chatrier court by having the exact position of the players on the court and the precise trajectory of the ball. These demonstrators will be presented on the following platforms:
          - On VRChat, in full motion capture, thanks to the technology of the company GVCap (available on VR headset and PC)
          - On Roblox, with the center of mass tracking technology of the company Hawk-Eye (available on mobile, tablet and PC)

Volumetric video on immersive devices

The technical tennis movements were captured in volumetric video thanks to the HOLOSYS, a technology developed by 4Dviews. These 3D tennis movements are viewable from different angles and at different speeds. They will be displayed on two immersive visualization devices :
        - On a VR headset within the Philippe Chatrier court modeled in 3D
        - On a 3D screen (SRD 27'') from SONY

Virtual assistant

France Televisions explores advances in generative AI and avatars developed by DeepBrain AI. From this collaboration, a virtual human will present, in French and English, the many innovations demonstrated within the RG Lab. The use of this AI Avatar enables France Television to experience and understand how AI is transforming media in Europe and around the world.
